SCC News Summary 2025

Meeting Date & Location

The SCC previously returned to in-person meetings at the Tukwila Community Center, still on the second Thursday of each month!

New meeting location: Tukwila Community Center, 12424 42nd Ave S, Tukwila, WA. The meeting time is now from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., due to staff shortages and early closing on most weeknights. Also see the calendar page, and mark your calendar accordingly.

2025 Meeting Programs:

  • We're pleased to report that every month in 2025 (except the off-site banquet) featured an in-person meeting at the Tukwila Community Center from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

  • December 11, 2025 - The table topic was "Water," and the program was the annual Holiday Party. We had a holiday-themed coins show & tell, a numismatic white elephant gift exchange ($20 limit), a special raffle, and more. A fun evening of fellowship to get everyone into the holiday spirit.

  • November 13, 2025 - The table topic was "Edge Details," and the program was given by Greg Bennick, who returned to explain the intriguing world of counterstamps. As the equivalent of tiny billboards, these coins open windows into remarkable stories behind merchants, vendors, and hucksters. (i.e. professional lemon squeezers??) This promised to be a high-energy, entertaining presentation!

  • October 9, 2025 - The table topic was "Unusual Shapes," and the program was President Rick Schultz explaining the forgotten era of Tax Tokens. These fractional-cent devices were used in Washington State, among others, during the 1930s through the 1950s to enforce the payment of sales tax on small purchases. Rick’s collection, and his knowledge of the tokens, are second to none!

  • September 11, 2025 - The table topic was "Unusual Materials," and the program was given by Dan Vornbrock, who discussed "Pre-Federal Coinage." The presentation highlighted coins circulating in the U.S. between our Independence in 1776, and the establishment of our first mint in 1792. In addition to foreign coins still circulating (Spanish, British & Portuguese) this period includes a wide variety of state-issued coins and private tokens. A fascinating period in our economic history.

  • August 14, 2025 - The table topic was "Clothes," and the program was given by Jeff Pritchard, who discussed the 1909 Alaska Yukon Pacific Exposition, the Klondike gold rush upon which it was based, and the many So-Called Dollars from the Exposition. An intriguing look at the region’s early history, the colorful characters involved, and the event that "put Seattle on the map!"

  • July 10, 2025 - the table topic was "Hair," and the program was given by David Hunzicker, who discussed "Assembling a U.S. Type Set." Dave explored the origins of his interest in assembling a U.S. type set, the choices made along the way that sculpted the set into its current form, and some thoughts on future expansion that compliment and extend his collection. An excellent presentation as so many numismatists endeavor to build a full or partial type set!

  • June 12, 2025 - the table Topic was "Flags," and the program was given by Erik Jansen, current ANA Treasurer and former member of the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee (CCAC), who provided an in-depth look at the coin production process. From Congressional approval to design and engraving, to modern production challenges, Erik will share “how the sausage gets made.” This promises to be a fascinating look behind-the-scenes at the U.S. Mint.

  • May 8, 2025 - The table topic was "Trees," and the program was given by Faiz Kass-Elias, who returned to the SCC with an overview of "Roman Provincial Coinage." Faiz is a highly respected local dealer and collector in ancients with an enjoyable “fireside chat” manner of presenting. It was a great opportunity to learn about the coinage and history of the Roman Empire.

  • April 10, 2025 - The table topic was "Landscapes," and the program (revised) was given by nationally recognized Conder Token authority Brian Herriott, who joined us the night before the PNNA Convention, at the same location.

  • March 13, 2025 - Instead of our usual March meeting, we came together at Angelo’s Restaurant, 601 SW 153rd St., Burien WA, 98166. In addition to great Italian cuisine and numismatic fellowship, we held a white elephant auction to raise money for the club treasury. (See the SCC banquet page for a more detailed banquet report.)

  • February 13, 2025 - The table topic was "Extra Large," and the program was "Hudson’s Bay Beaver Tokens." Dan Vornbrock provided an overview of these little-known tokens. Beaver tokens were the unit of currency used in early fur trading. Trappers received a full token for each beaver pelt and would subsequently use the tokens for supplies or merchandise at company stores. An intriguing part of frontier history.

  • January 9, 2025 - The table topic was "Tiny," and the program was given by Mike Zagorin, who began collecting early hammered British coinage back in the 1960s. After decades of accumulating a remarkable collection, this past summer Mike consigned the coins to Heritage Auctions for liquidation. Mike shared his journey from painstakingly acquiring the collection, his negotiations with Heritage, their promotion of his sale, and their liquidation process. A fascinating look inside the auction world!
